In the winter, my husband likes to enjoy a cup of tea in the evenings. While I do like tea, having any caffeine that late at night keeps me up most of the night. I prefer coffee to tea, so I treat myself to a decaf coffee drink in the evening while he enjoys his tea.

It’s just easier to use a powdered coffee mix after a long day, but the store-bought Swiss Mocha coffee mixes are expensive and full of questionable ingredients. Luckily, it’s easy to make my own mocha coffee. It uses ingredients that I almost always have on the shelf, except for the coffee, so I like that I only have to buy one ingredient when I want to make it. Now I know exactly what I’m drinking, and I can make it much cheaper than I can buy it for.

This mocha coffee mix recipe would also make a great gift for Christmas. You can put it in a jar, label with a sticker or hangtag, and it would make a unique gift for a coffee drinker. You could also make this Coffee and Cocoa Soap recipe to make a perfect themed gift for the coffee-lovers in your life.

What type of coffee to use in this swiss mocha mix recipe?

You can use either regular instant coffee or decaffeinated instant coffee in this mocha coffee recipe. I’m not normally a fan of decaf, but I do use it in my mixes because I generally have them in the evening. If you have instant coffee left over, store it in the freezer until you make this again to keep it fresher.

Sugar Substitute Ideas

This Swiss Mocha coffee mix recipe does call for sugar. You can either use table sugar, a sugar substitute, or coconut sugar. Coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index than table sugar, and it does have some nutrients where table sugar does not. However, it is still something to use sparingly. You can adjust the amount to taste. I find that the less sugar I eat, the sweeter things with sugar taste. I used slightly less sugar with great results.

  • TIP:If you do use a sugar substitute, then you will have to experiment with the measurements. You may need more or less depending on the product that you use.

You also have some options with the dry milk. You can use nonfat dry milk or whole dry milk. Whole dry milk has about 50 more calories per ¼ cup than nonfat dry milk, but it does make the mix creamier. Personally, I like the taste of the whole milk for the extra 20-25 calories in one cup.

The coconut oil makes this mocha coffee a little creamier and makes it froth. It’s optional, but I prefer it in the recipe. I used unrefined coconut oil, and the coconut flavor didn’t affect the final flavor at all.

Instructions

  • Melt the coconut oil in the microwave for 15-30 seconds.

  • Combine the dry ingredients and pour the melted coconut oil on top.

  • Use a food processor or blender to blend until smooth. This helps the mix dissolve easier in the water.

  • Store in a mason jar with a lid.

  • Use 1-2 tablespoons per 1 cup of hot water. Stir well.

This mix should last for several weeks on the shelf, so feel free to double it if needed.
