WBC 2023 Team Tournament Results (2024)

For the sixth straight year, the Team Tournament Champions had at least 1 goose egg from one member of their team. The Terrafarmers had only two members score points for their team but so did their closest rival, Robo Dobby. Terrafarmers ended with 17 points , 8 points from Robb Effinger (Innovation), 9 points from Eric Wrobel (Terraforming Mars), and 0 points from Ryan Feathers and Eric Freeman. Second Place finishers Robo Dobby had 13 points, 11 points from Steve Alfieri (Crokinole), 2 points from Felicia Alfieri (Root) and 0 points from Christian Kasilag and Dylan Quintana.

The Terrafarmers were the only of the top 10 ranked teams to finish in the Top 10 in 2023. Four teams with ranked 45 or higher with odds at 130-1 or larger finished in the top 10. Robo Dobby finished second with 200-1 odds (rank 52), Local Yokels finished sixth with 130-1 odds (rank 45), The Kalt-menagerie finished eight with 200-1 odds (rank 50), and Mafia: Graviano finished tenth with 300-1 odds (rank 57). The rest of the top ten were Deadline Crew (third), Schooled by a Fool (fourth), So You’re Telling Me There’s a Chance (fifth), 7Springs Summer Ski Team (seventh), and Dice Loving Canucks: Ringeres (ninth).

No team had more than 3 members score this year. Four teams had 3 members score including 3 in the top ten. Thirteen teams had 2 players score including the first, second, and ninth place teams. Thirty teams had 1 player score and fourteen teams had no one score.

The big movers against the odds were Robo Dobby up 50 spaces from #52 to #2 , followed by Greenville Mafia: Graviano up 47 spaces to tenth, Blockheads up 47 spaces to eleventh, The Kalt-menagerie up 42 spaces to eight, and Local Yokels up 39 spaces to sixth. The highest-ranking teams to plummet were Me and 3 Stiffs down 45 places to fifty-seventh, We Ain’t Dead Yet down 41 spaces forty-seventh, Mafia: Tattaglia down 40 spaces to next to last, and The Harry B’s down 39 spaces from first to forty.

Predicting wins was down with 7.3%, compared to 8.5% in 2022, of our field (18 entrants) managing to successfully predict their win with 6 of those achieving it in an event they had not won before. Overall, a total of 29.9% of the participants managed to place in the top 6 of their events, down from 47.1% in 2022. Steve Alfieri proved to be the best earning 11 points for Robo Dobby followed by Andrew Freeman of So You’re Telling Me There’s A Chance and Kyle Smith of Local Yokels contributing 10 points, and Eric Wrobel of Terrafarmers and Aaron Kaltman of The Kalt-menagerie contributing 9 points to their teams.

With only 1 of the top ten ranked teams finishing in the top ten of this year's tournament, the Bracket Busting Contest was up for grabs for our 28 participants. Is 30% a good percentage, James Pei, Andrew Freeman, James Freeman, AJ Jiang, and Lumin Sperling thought so. Our bracket winner managed to pick 3 of our top ten finishers, down from 5 last year. The contest would come down to the first tie-breaker this year with James Pei being the only one in the group of five being able to correctly pick the placement of one of his picks. James successfully picked Schooled by A Fool to finish fourth to become our Bracket Busting winner in 2023. Nine others successfully picked 2 teams in their bracket. No one but James picked a team in the correct position. Congratulations to James Pei on earning his 2024 Sustaining membership.
