Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave their lives in defense of our country. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum is grateful to our veterans and there are 57 Distinguished Members, 16 Outstanding Americans, and three Medal of Courage recipients who have wrestled and served their country. We want to say thank you to our veterans, and encourage you to thank them, for their service and for all that they have sacrificed. The relationship between the Armed Forces and the sport of wrestling dates back thousands of years. From the early days of mankind to the modern soldier, wrestling, also known as combative arms by the military, has been a big part of battle and modern-day training. Our Board of Governors made it a priority in the renovation of the museum to include “Glory Beyond the Sport - Wrestling and the Military,” which recognizes the contributions of wrestlers in the military. Some of our nation’s greatest military leaders who made their mark on mankind’s oldest and greatest sport, including:President Theodore Roosevelt, who wrestled and was instrumental in bringing wrestling to the military academies -> https://bit.ly/34sMgWbMaryland Wrestling's Thomas R. Guy Lookabaugh, a Distinguished Member inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1983, was born on this date in 1896. #LegendsLiveOnREAD more about Guy, who passed away in 1981 -> https://bit.ly/3bRDaGOAs the first superstar of Oklahoma State athletics, Guy helped establish a wrestling dynasty that spanned half a century. Nicknamed "Ducky," he never lost a college wrestling match for Oklahoma State. His career preceded the NCAA tournaments, but in 1921 he won championships of three conferences – the Missouri Valley (Big Eight), Western (Big Ten) and Southwest. His flamboyant style was evident in his first big freestyle tournament. Facing Eino Leino, a Finn who would win four Olympic medals, Lookabaugh threw him out of the ring and pinned him on the floor. The referee ruled it an illegal fall.#SportForAll #AnyBODYCanWrestle #thisiswhatawrestlerlookslike #GirlsWrestle #LetsWrestle #GrowTheSportYou can be whatever you desire in this sport because wrestling truly is for everyone!
